MANUFACTURING GLOSSARY / MRP

MRP: Material requirements planning

MRP is a time-phased calculation that uses demand, bills of material, inventory, open supply, and lead-time assumptions to suggest what to make or buy and when.

What it means in manufacturing

MRP focuses on dependent material demand. It does not by itself prove that machines, people, tooling, or other resources can execute the proposed dates.

A question to use in evaluation

Are on-hand, reserved, on-order, held, and substituted quantities represented consistently, and who owns each planning assumption?

Keep the label and the evidence separate

Category terms describe a type of work; they do not establish what a specific software release, configuration, integration, or customer process can do. Test the proposed boundary with representative records, responsible owners, failure cases, and written acceptance criteria.

Your next step

Test the definition against your operation.

Use a real workflow to determine where the record lives, who decides, and what evidence the proposed scope must retain.

Necessary technology is always active because it provides security and remembers this choice.
