CUI: Controlled unclassified information
CUI is information the U.S. government creates or possesses, or that an entity creates or possesses for the government, that requires safeguarding or dissemination controls under applicable law, regulation, or government-wide policy.
What it means in manufacturing
The authoritative categories and markings are maintained in the National Archives CUI Registry. A manufacturer should have qualified contract and security owners determine what information is CUI and where it is permitted to be processed.
A question to use in evaluation
Which records, users, systems, providers, exports, and support paths fall inside the authorized CUI boundary?
Keep the label and the evidence separate
Category terms describe a type of work; they do not establish what a specific software release, configuration, integration, or customer process can do. Test the proposed boundary with representative records, responsible owners, failure cases, and written acceptance criteria.
