MANUFACTURING GLOSSARY / APS
APS: Advanced planning and scheduling
APS is software that models material and resource constraints to produce or evaluate production plans and schedules.
What it means in manufacturing
APS may use rules, optimization, heuristics, or AI-assisted methods. A plausible schedule is not automatically feasible; inputs, hard constraints, overrides, and approval still need review.
A question to use in evaluation
Which constraints are mandatory, which can be overridden, and how does the system explain a changed sequence?
Keep the label and the evidence separate
Category terms describe a type of work; they do not establish what a specific software release, configuration, integration, or customer process can do. Test the proposed boundary with representative records, responsible owners, failure cases, and written acceptance criteria.
Your next step
Test the definition against your operation.
Use a real workflow to determine where the record lives, who decides, and what evidence the proposed scope must retain.
